Alyssa Eisner Henkin

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1998 with a degree in English and History and a stack of term papers on tea in Alice In Wonderland and abolitionists in 1830's Boston, I was fortunate to land a dream job at Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers.  At Simon & Schuster, the time spent learning to edit, color-correct and pitch books to sales and marketing amidst a frenzied growing market of kidlit readers was invaluable. And so was the privilege of working with people who loved Anne of Green Gables as much as I did. Ultimately my inner entrepreneur led me to become a literary agent at Trident Media Group. At Trident, I cultivated a stable of bestselling and multi-award-winning authors including Ruth Behar, Julie Berry, Jen Bryant, Lisa Greenwald and R.J. Palacio among many others. A plethora of ancillary deals for film, theatrical, merchandising and international editions made me an ardent advocate for the rights of creators.

Now at Birch Path Literary, my lifelong dream of presiding over my own venture is here. I come from a long line of business owners who instilled in me a deep appreciation of hard work, defying the status quo and of leadership steeped in both integrity and passion. Just as Anne Shirley strode down the Birch Path to school, I am thrilled to navigate the publishing journey with my clients as we encounter twists, bends and the thrill of new discoveries at every turn.

Children’s and young adult literature and illustration comprises the bulk of my list, but I do represent select fiction and nonfiction for adults. In all genres I seek heartfelt storytelling and innovation. Underrepresented perspectives, little-known facts and figures, and novel formats and structures inspire me. I relish retro art, lyrical language, swift pacing, and settings from around the globe steeped in rich regional and ethnic flavors. My favorite books layer searches for identity and empowerment with subtle humor and ultimately hopefulness.
